iPhone lowdown - Do we believe the hype?
Posted by Gavin Shinfield on August 19, 2008
So I’ve been using my ‘breakthrough mobile internet device’ for about a week now. Does it live up to expectations?
The short answer is yes, it’s wonderful. The long answer is a bit more complicated, more of that later.
The usability, software and features are all spot on. Even my Mum could use it and she is a self-proclaimed technophobe of the first order. The GPS and Google Maps integration is great and the 3G connection is nice and fast, which was good as it took me several days to connect to my home wireless network. After trying several reboots and alternative fixes I manually set the DNS to 4.2.2.2 following this post.
Besides that I’ve had no problems. My only gripes really relate to the ringfencing that Apple insist is for our own good when really it’s all geared around making them more money and forcing users to exclusively use Apple specific software and file formats. This is summed up by the fact that it is nigh on impossible for iPhone users to set custom ringtones without following a highly convoluted procedure of workarounds. The simple solution? Go to iTunes Store, purchase your song and then pay again to convert to ringtone. Go figure. This is a cynical moneymaking scam by Apple and should be exposed as such.
A ‘beautiful jail’ indeed.
