Campaign Monitor and Web Standards support in HTML email

Posted by Paul Sturgess on September 11, 2007

Campaign Monitor, our email newsletter manager of choice, will soon be launching a dedicated website to help fight the case for Web Standards support in HTML email.

Support for web standards in email clients is terrible and took a large step backwards with the release of Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Campaign Monitor have had enough. They are starting a movement to convince Web Designers and Developers to stop trying to persuade their clients to use text-based email and take the issue to the email client vendors to encourage them to improve their support for web standards.

They are currently putting together a baseline for standards support with the aid of the web community. The aim is to create a simple acid test that makes it easy to see if an email client supports this baseline, much like WaSP’s Acid2 test, that is used as a guide to test web standards in browsers.

This is exactly the kind of action we at Kyan like to see and Campaign Monitor will certainly be getting our full support.

I support but did not understand exactly if Microsoft Outlook 2007 support them?

I have the same problem using the NormalEmail template and even when I use the 2007 QuickStyle template – Outlook 2007 drops the numbers and the bullets anless I reattach the template/Quickstyle – which is a hassle for everyday operators. Any ideas how I can get the bullets and numbers to ‘stick’ in Outlook 2007? Would adding the HTML to the Template or QuickStyle template work? I am using HTML in Outlook, not RTF – would it be hidden to the general user?
